How admission works
You apply online through the national eVŠ portal in the joint call for enrolment (Razpis za vpis), published each winter by the universities and the Ministry, and you can list up to three study choices in order of preference. University programmes and long single-cycle programmes (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine) require the Slovenian general matura or an equivalent foreign school-leaving certificate, which the institution recognises in a separate procedure; some programmes also hold aptitude tests. If applications exceed the places by 10% or more, entry is restricted and applicants are ranked by points (up to 100) from their matura results and final-year grades. For the 2026/27 intake the first round for Slovenian and EU citizens ran from 18 February to 18 March 2026; the dates for the autumn 2027 intake will be set in the 2027/28 call (not yet published in October 2026), and non-EU citizens apply in separate rounds with each university's own deadlines.

Tuition fees in Slovenia
At public universities an EU student typically pays no tuition fee, and a student from outside the EU €4,000 a year. All amounts are per year in euros; fees charged per credit or per semester are converted to a full year (60 ECTS credits or two semesters).
| EU students, typical | EU students, range | Non-EU students, typical | Non-EU students, range | Programmes with a published fee | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public universities | €0 | €0 | €4,000 | €2,100–€18,337 | 276 of 276 |
| Private universities | €0 | €0–€2,180 | €3,000 | €2,300–€4,950 | 26 of 26 |
Where the fee depends on family income, the typical figure is the full fee and the range starts at the lowest one.
Good to know about fees
- Slovenija: Under Article 137 of the Higher Education Act (ZVIS-1), full-time study on publicly funded programmes is free in 2026/27 for citizens of Slovenia, the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland; this covers public institutions and the concession places at private institutions listed here. Citizens of other countries pay the tuition set in each institution's price list, except citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Serbia (exempt under bilateral protocols) and non-EU nationals who finished secondary school in Slovenia or have permanent residence there with tax residency. Since 2021/22 UK citizens count as non-EU. Part-time study is paid by everyone.
