Student Housing in Slovenia: Dormitories and Private Rooms
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
Housing is the part of studying in Slovenia that depends most on where you go. Dormitory rules are set by each operator, and the University of Ljubljana tells international students plainly that it does not provide student accommodation itself. Many international degree students end up in the private market, so start looking as soon as you are admitted.
Ljubljana
The student dormitories in Ljubljana are run by Študentski dom Ljubljana (ŠDL), which lists 29 dormitories and 7,500 beds. The University of Ljubljana's own page for international students says:
- Its exchange dormitories have very few beds, with double rooms, shared bathrooms and kitchens and no single rooms. Bed prices for exchange students range from €119.28 to €230.89 a month, and about €30 of other costs are added. Beds go on a first come, first served basis, and the 2026/27 application opened on 16 May 2026.
- Students who receive a ministry scholarship, and Slovenes without Slovenian citizenship, can be given one of up to 250 places in student residence halls. Rent is €150 to €190 a month in shared double rooms and is paid straight from the scholarship.
- Private accommodation costs €200 to €500 a month, depending on size, location and sharing.
ŠDL's page for foreign students lists scholarship and exchange routes, and it also says faculties may ask three high-school dormitories about free places for stays without a subsidy. It does not state a general route for non-EU students who start a degree, so write to the reception office at sprejemna@sdl.si before you count on a bed. The University of Ljubljana's leaflet also names the private room agency Zavod Študentska svetovalnica (m2) and lists rooms@sou-lj.si as a contact for rooms.
University of Primorska
On the coast, the University of Primorska reserves 15% of its dormitory beds for international students starting a bachelor's degree in the year of the call. You must be enrolled or invited to enrol for the first time in a first-year programme in 2026/27 and complete secondary school that year. You apply with an online form on the university's welcome site. Students on a semester abroad cannot use these beds.
The university says most students rent private flats in Koper, Izola and Portorož and that sharing a room is common. For short stays, it suggests Villa Domus, a student-run hostel with 69 beds for stays under 60 days. It recommends looking from mid-September to the end of April, when availability is better and rents are lower.
Maribor, Nova Gorica and rents
Study in Slovenia, the national study portal, gives rent ranges without a date and without utilities:
| City | Dormitory | Private, double room | Private, single room |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ljubljana | €120–€250 | €150–€200 | €200–€350 |
| Maribor | €100–€170 | €90–€120 | €120–€150 |
| Primorska | €190 | €150–€250 | €200–€300 |
| Nova Gorica | €120–€170 | €150–€180 | €150–€180 |
For comparison, the University of Ljubljana quotes €200 to €500 for private rooms in its own city, so the portal's figures may be at the low end. The University of Maribor's exchange dormitories are priced per semester, from €945 for a bed in a double room with all costs except laundry, and they are for exchange students. For degree students, ask the university for its housing contacts.
Finding a private room
- Use the sites the operators name: kamrica.dostop.si and uni-info.si (named by ŠDL), and nepremicnine.net and bolha.com (named by the University of Primorska).
- The University of Ljubljana advises booking a hostel for at least a week at the start and contacting room services before you arrive.
- Be careful with offers in social media groups. The University of Primorska warns about them in particular.
- Never pay before you have a written agreement. Read finding student housing in Europe without being scammed.
Registering your address
Non-EU students in private accommodation must register their address within 8 days of receiving the residence permit. EU citizens need an address confirmation to receive their registration certificate. See student visa for Slovenia.
Tips
- Apply for a dormitory the moment you are admitted, and ask what applies to your citizenship.
- Compare the whole monthly cost: rents are often quoted without utilities.
- Students with an active status can use the subsidised URBANA bus card in Ljubljana, which costs €20 a month.
