Student Visa and Residence Permit for Slovenia: Documents, Funds and Fees
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
Slovenia has no single "student visa". If you stay longer than three months you need either a residence registration certificate (EU citizens) or a temporary residence permit for study (non-EU citizens), and some non-EU citizens also need an entry visa first. This guide reflects the University of Ljubljana's and the government's pages in October 2026. Amounts change, so check them before you pay.
EU and EEA citizens
If you stay longer than three months, you must obtain a residence registration certificate within your first three months. You start at the administrative unit (upravna enota) where you live. In Ljubljana you book an appointment by phone or through eSamonaročanje. The certificate is valid for five years, or for a shorter period if you ask for one.
The University of Ljubljana lists these documents:
- a signed application form, a biometric photo and a signature form
- a valid passport or ID card, valid for at least three months after your intended stay
- proof of your purpose of stay, such as proof of admission
- proof of sufficient means, as a statement or an employment contract
- a copy of your European Health Insurance Card
- confirmation of your address, which you need when you receive the permit
The fees are €9.10 and €0.50 when you submit, plus €12.32 for the card when you collect it.
Non-EU citizens: visa and permit
Non-EU citizens need a temporary residence permit for study. Where you apply depends on your situation:
- Visa required to enter: apply at the Slovenian embassy or consulate. The University of Ljubljana advises applying as soon as you are enrolled, ideally three to six months before arrival, and warns that an embassy-issued permit makes an October start unlikely.
- No visa needed, or already in Slovenia legally: apply at the administrative unit where you live.
If you need an entry visa, you apply for a long-stay (type D) visa. The Slovenian embassy in Washington lists a fee of €77, collected in dollars, and a processing time of up to 30 calendar days after the documents are complete. It also asks for travel medical insurance valid in the whole Schengen area with at least €30,000 of cover. Other embassies may differ, so check yours.
Documents
According to the University of Ljubljana, you need:
- a signed application form and signature form
- a passport valid at least three months beyond your stay, with a certified copy
- a biometric photo of 35 x 45 mm
- proof of enrolment
- proof of valid health insurance in Slovenia
- a criminal record certificate from your home country, issued within the last three months, translated into Slovenian and apostilled or certified where needed
- proof of sufficient funds and payment of the fees
See apostille and legalisation of documents and sworn translation of documents. You also give two fingerprints.
Funds
You must show at least €507.43 a month for the whole academic year. The University of Ljubljana accepts:
- a written declaration from a parent or guardian, in English or Slovenian
- earnings from student work
- a scholarship
- bank funds
- a grant from the institution
Fees
For a permit applied for in Slovenia, you pay €50.00 for the permit, a €4.50 application fee and €15.47 for the card. The government's EU immigration portal lists different amounts for applications at a Slovenian embassy, so ask the embassy what applies to you.
Validity and renewal
Student permits are usually valid until 30 September of the following year. Renew by the expiry date, and you may apply up to 60 days earlier. If you miss it, you must apply for a new permit. You usually do not need a new criminal record certificate for three years. You may travel while your application is pending if you have a valid biometric passport, do not need a Schengen visa and carry proof of the pending application.
After arrival
If you live in private accommodation, you must register your address within 8 days of receiving the permit. If you enter without a visa or permit, you must register your stay with the police within three days. At the border, the EES records your photo and fingerprints and you no longer get a passport stamp, so keep your ticket or the EES receipt as proof of entry.
Students with a permit may also work during its validity, within the rules for employment and student work. See scholarships and student jobs in Slovenia.
