IB Diploma and A-Levels for Admission to Universities in Cyprus
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
IB and A-level students are the main foreign applicants Cypriot universities expect. The conditions differ sharply between the public universities, the private universities and medicine, so it matters where you apply.
Private universities: the realistic route
Private universities admit directly. The University of Nicosia (UNIC) names a recognised High School Leaving Certificate as the minimum entry requirement, and its general undergraduate page lists no IB points threshold. It only lists IB English grades for language proof. European University Cyprus (EUC) asks for completed secondary education and does not state IB points for general programmes either. For most programmes, finishing the IB Diploma and meeting the English requirement is the baseline. Some programmes set higher conditions, so read the page of your programme.
English grades in the IB
Both universities accept IB English for the language requirement of English-taught programmes:
| Institution | Accepted IB English |
|---|---|
| UNIC | English A: Literature SL or HL 4 and above, English B SL 5 and above, English B HL 4 and above |
| EUC | English B HL 5 and above, English B SL 6 and above |
If you do not reach these grades, other tests such as IELTS are accepted. See bachelor's degrees in English in Cyprus.
Medicine
Medicine is the one area where the IB score matters a lot.
- UNIC, six-year MD: the IB route requires 32 overall and a combined score of 16 at Higher Level, including Biology and at least one of Chemistry, Physics or Maths. The A-level route requires ABB, including Biology, one of Chemistry, Physics or Maths, and one more subject. UNIC adds an online interview and does not list an entrance test for the six-year programme.
- EUC, Medicine and Dentistry: international applicants need an average of 90% or above or its equivalent, and Biology plus Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics must be passed in national exams, as A-levels or as IB Higher Level subjects. EUC's page sets no specific IB points. It asks for an application fee of €200, a personal statement, an academic reference and an interview for medicine.
Both universities say that meeting the minimum grades does not guarantee an offer. Offers can be conditional on final results. For the overall picture, see study medicine in English in Europe.
Public universities: Greek is the barrier
The Pancyprian Examinations are for students of Cypriot schools, not for IB students from abroad. Foreign qualifications go through a limited route at each university:
- CUT says it assesses foreign applicants only on international exam results, GCE or International and European Baccalaureate, and publishes lists of required courses and grades. It applies to citizens other than Cypriot or Greek, and all its bachelor's programmes are taught in Greek.
- The University of Cyprus runs an application window for foreign qualifications, 2 to 30 April in 2026. The programmes are mostly taught in Greek.
If you do not speak Greek well, these universities are not an option for you. See how to get into a university in Cyprus.
Practical advice for IB students
- Plan around results day. Ask the admissions office whether it issues conditional offers on predicted grades and what deadline applies to your final results.
- Keep your IB documents ready. You will need a certificate and transcript, certified or attested as the institution requires. See document recognition for Cyprus.
- Check the visa timeline. Non-EU students should submit visa documents at least three months before the semester at EUC. See student visa for Cyprus.
- Compare with other countries. See IB diploma universities in continental Europe.
