Student Visa and Residence Permit for Cyprus: Steps for EU and Non-EU

Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.

The process in Cyprus depends on your citizenship. EU citizens enter freely and register after arrival. Students from outside the EU need an entry permit before travelling, which their institution requests for them. This guide reflects what the EU Immigration Portal and two large universities publish in October 2026. Practices differ between institutions, so use it as a map, not as a checklist.

EU citizens

You do not need a visa. If you stay longer than three months, you apply for a residence permit with the Civil Registry and Migration Department. The University of Nicosia says EU students should apply within four months of entry and that its Admissions Office helps. You need health insurance or a European Hospitalisation Card, which is the European Health Insurance Card. See health insurance for students in Cyprus.

Non-EU students: who applies

You must be enrolled in a recognised higher education institution. According to the EU Immigration Portal, you obtain a visa or an entry permit before you arrive, then a temporary residence permit after arrival. The entry permit comes from the Civil Registry and Migration Department. In practice your institution submits the file to the Migration Department and the Ministry of Education, and sends you a copy of the approved permit, which you need to travel.

Typical documents

The EU portal lists proof of admission, proof of sufficient funds and health insurance, a criminal record certificate and a passport copy. The universities spell this out:

The EU portal does not state a minimum amount of funds or any state fee, so the amounts above are institutional requirements.

Deposits and fees

EUC asks for a €3,000 tuition deposit by bank transfer before sending your visa file, and says the Migration Department will not accept the application without proof of payment. UNIC lists a visa application fee of €150 in its 2026/27 fee list.

Timing

EUC asks for visa documents at least three months before the semester and says entry permits typically take three to four weeks. Its non-EU visa deadlines are 31 August for the October intake and 15 January for the February intake. Start early: certificates and attestations from your home country take time.

After arrival

Working with a student permit

Students may work up to 20 hours a week in listed sectors, under a contract certified by the Department of Labour. See scholarships and student jobs in Cyprus.

After your degree

The EU portal mentions a job-search or entrepreneurship permit only for students who completed a master's or PhD under the mobility scheme. Do not assume a bachelor's graduate can stay. Ask the Migration Department before you plan on it.
