How admission works
There is no national application portal: you apply online directly to each university, Fachhochschule or private university. You need the Austrian Matura or an equivalent foreign school-leaving certificate that gives access to the same kind of study in the country where it was issued, plus proof of German (or English for English-taught programmes); public universities admit to most bachelor's and Diplom programmes without selection, and the general admission deadline for the winter semester is 5 September (5 September 2027 for the 2027/28 intake). Medicine and dentistry use the joint MedAT test (for 2027: registration expected 1–31 March, test expected 9 July; at least 75% of medicine places go to holders of an Austrian Matura and at most 5% to non-EU applicants), and some other fields such as psychology, as well as arts and music programmes, have entrance or aptitude tests with earlier registration. Fachhochschulen and Pädagogische Hochschulen always run their own admission procedure with their own deadlines.

Tuition fees in Austria
At public universities an EU student typically pays no tuition fee, and a student from outside the EU €1,453 a year. All amounts are per year in euros; fees charged per credit or per semester are converted to a full year (60 ECTS credits or two semesters).
| EU students, typical | EU students, range | Non-EU students, typical | Non-EU students, range | Programmes with a published fee | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public universities | €0 | €0–€727 | €1,453 | €0–€19,000 | 672 of 672 |
| Private universities | €900 | €640–€28,358 | €2,760 | €820–€28,358 | 101 of 104 |
Where the fee depends on family income, the typical figure is the full fee and the range starts at the lowest one.
Good to know about fees
- Österreich: At public universities and Pädagogische Hochschulen, students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland (and some equivalent groups) pay no tuition within the standard length of study plus two extra semesters, and €363.36 per semester after that. Other non-EU students with a student residence permit pay €726.72 per semester; nationals of the least-developed countries listed in the regulation are exempt. Every student also pays the ÖH student union fee (€26.20 per semester in 2026/27), which is not shown as tuition. Fachhochschulen may charge up to €363.36 per semester (most do, some charge non-EU students more), and private universities set their own fees.
