How admission works in Austria

There is no national application portal: you apply online directly to each university, Fachhochschule or private university. You need the Austrian Matura or an equivalent foreign school-leaving certificate that gives access to the same kind of study in the country where it was issued, plus proof of German (or English for English-taught programmes); public universities admit to most bachelor's and Diplom programmes without selection, and the general admission deadline for the winter semester is 5 September (5 September 2027 for the 2027/28 intake). Medicine and dentistry use the joint MedAT test (for 2027: registration expected 1–31 March, test expected 9 July; at least 75% of medicine places go to holders of an Austrian Matura and at most 5% to non-EU applicants), and some other fields such as psychology, as well as arts and music programmes, have entrance or aptitude tests with earlier registration. Fachhochschulen and Pädagogische Hochschulen always run their own admission procedure with their own deadlines. More in the guide Study in Austria.
