Student Visa and Residence Permit for Liechtenstein: Steps and Deposit
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
According to the University of Liechtenstein, the visa for study is applied for at a Swiss embassy, and the residence permit comes from the Liechtenstein Immigration and Passport Office. The University of Liechtenstein has a coordination office for residence permits and does much of the guidance. This guide follows the university's pages as of October 2026. It is not the text of the law, so confirm details with the university before you travel.
Who needs what
The university's FAQ says that if you move to Liechtenstein for your studies you will generally need a residence permit. If you come from a country outside the EU, the EEA or Switzerland, you will also need a visa.
- EU, EEA and Swiss citizens: if you move your residence to Liechtenstein for your studies, a short-term residence permit is mandatory. EU and EEA citizens can instead live in Switzerland or Austria, but the university cannot help with the administrative procedures there.
- Third-country nationals: students from most third countries need a visa to enter. Admission as a guest student is not sufficient. You must hold a letter of admission to the university.
The visa
You apply for the visa at the Swiss embassy in your home country. The documents include your letter of admission. The university provides a guarantee in the form of a bank bond for the visa. In return, you pay the university a deposit of CHF 3,000. It serves as security and is only refunded after you complete the degree programme. The university directs questions about the legal rules and the procedure to its Coordination Office for Residence Permits, at bewilligungen@uni.li. The university's own pages do not list the other documents or the visa fee, so ask the office or the Swiss embassy.
The university's housing pages add a restriction: students from outside Europe need a Schengen visa, and if it was issued because of your student status in Liechtenstein, you may reside only in Liechtenstein, not in Switzerland, Austria or Germany. See student housing in Liechtenstein.
Visa nationals have an earlier application deadline: 31 March for the winter semester and 30 September for the summer semester, against 30 July and 30 November for EU, EEA and Swiss nationals. See how to get into the University of Liechtenstein.
The residence permit
You apply for the residence permit at the Liechtenstein Immigration and Passport Office before the start of your studies. Check the requirements early, because the university's pages stress that you should inform yourself about the process in good time. The university does not publish the list of documents or the fee on these pages.
After you arrive
The university tells students to register with the competent municipal authority within 14 days of arrival. The welcome checklist the university gives to admitted students also asks you to confirm that your visa has been applied for and received before you travel. Health insurance becomes mandatory if you live in the country for more than three months. See health insurance for students in Liechtenstein.
Working with a residence permit
Students who live in Liechtenstein with a residence permit may work up to 35% during the lecture period and full-time in semester breaks, but need approval from the Immigration and Passport Office before they start. See working while studying in Liechtenstein.
