Cost of Studying in Liechtenstein: Tuition per Semester and Living Costs
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
The University of Liechtenstein charges tuition per semester in Swiss francs, and the price depends on who you are. The difference is not simply EU against non-EU, because the school-leaving certificate and a Liechtenstein permit also count. Living costs are the larger part of the budget.
Tuition per semester
The university states two prices for bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes:
- CHF 950 per semester for EU/EEA and Swiss nationals, for students who hold a permanent residence permit or a settlement permit in Liechtenstein, and for anyone who obtained their school-leaving certificate (Matura) in an EU/EEA country or in Switzerland
- CHF 1,250 per semester for students from other countries who do not meet those conditions
This means a non-EU citizen who finished school in the EU, EEA or Switzerland pays the lower price. There are two semesters a year, so the annual tuition is CHF 1,900 or CHF 2,500. At the exchange rate our catalogue uses, that is about €2,008 a year for the lower tier and €2,643 for the higher one. A fixed CHF 10 of each semester's tuition goes to the student body's services.
Other fees
- Application fee: CHF 100, non-refundable, for anyone who has not previously been enrolled in a bachelor's, master's or doctoral programme at the university. It must be initiated by the application deadline. See how to get into the University of Liechtenstein.
- Services not covered by tuition, such as administrative services, decisions or use of infrastructure, may be charged separately. The details are in the implementing provisions of the fee regulations.
- Visa deposit: students from most third countries need a visa, and the university provides a bank guarantee for it. In return, those students must pay the university a deposit of CHF 3,000, which is refunded only after they complete the degree. See the student visa guide.
When you pay
For the first semester the university says the earlier the better, and your place is only guaranteed once the fee is paid in full. For later semesters the tuition must be paid in full no later than the 15th of the month before the semester starts. Otherwise you cannot register for courses and continue your studies.
Living costs
The university estimates monthly living costs at about CHF 1,500, and stresses that they vary a lot. Its reference values:
- rent including utilities: about CHF 680
- telephone: about CHF 20
- health insurance: about CHF 100
- clothing, laundry and hygiene: about CHF 100
- leisure and pocket money: about CHF 150
These items do not add up to the CHF 1,500 total, so the rest is for items the university does not list. A room in the campus dormitory costs CHF 400 to CHF 600 a month, according to the university. See student housing in Liechtenstein.
Insurance costs
Anyone who lives in Liechtenstein for more than three months must have health insurance. See health insurance for students in Liechtenstein. The university also recommends, but does not require, private liability insurance. It costs between CHF 85 and CHF 150 a year and typically covers up to CHF 5 million.
Funding
The University of Liechtenstein does not offer its own scholarships. You must secure funding for tuition and living costs before you start. The university points to external options:
- Foundations and scholarship databases, such as the Austrian Scholarship Database. Students who live in Liechtenstein can also apply to the Swiss Study Foundation.
- Student loans. Government interest-free loans in Liechtenstein require, among other conditions, at least three years of residence there, so they are not an option for newly arriving international students. The platform Splendit connects students with private lenders.
- Support from your home country. Austrian students may qualify for the Mobilitätsstipendium, and Swiss cantons offer scholarships and loans. The university's FAQ also mentions German BAföG as often available.
- Part-time work. See working while studying in Liechtenstein.
