How admission works
Latvia has no single national application portal: you apply to each institution, usually online through its own admission system, and international applicants often through a separate platform (for example DreamApply at the University of Latvia). Applicants with a Latvian school-leaving certificate are ranked by their centralised exam (CE) results, normally in Latvian, a foreign language and mathematics plus subjects set by the programme; a foreign school-leaving certificate must first be assessed by the Academic Information Centre (AIC), and the institution converts its grades for the ranking. State-funded (budget) places go to the best-ranked applicants, and citizens of EU/EEA countries and Switzerland compete for them on equal terms with Latvians. The main admission round is in July, after the CE results are out; each institution publishes its rules for the autumn 2027 intake by 30 November 2026, and English-taught programmes for international applicants usually close earlier.
- Selection: grade limit (numerus clausus)
- Main exam or platform: Centralizētie eksāmeni (CE)
Tuition fees in Latvia
At public universities an EU student typically pays €3,300 a year, and a student from outside the EU €3,700 a year. All amounts are per year in euros; fees charged per credit or per semester are converted to a full year (60 ECTS credits or two semesters).
| EU students, typical | EU students, range | Non-EU students, typical | Non-EU students, range | Programmes with a published fee | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public universities | €3,300 | €0–€17,310 | €3,700 | €2,700–€17,310 | 255 of 256 |
| Private universities | €2,990 | €2,000–€6,800 | €3,900 | €2,800–€8,000 | 67 of 67 |
Where the fee depends on family income, the typical figure is the full fee and the range starts at the lowest one.
Good to know about fees
- Latvija: State-funded (budget) places are free of tuition; they are mostly in Latvian-taught full-time programmes at public institutions, and citizens of EU/EEA countries and Switzerland may compete for them on equal terms with Latvians. The fees shown for Latvian and EU students are the 2026/27 fees for a paid place that each institution published in the national education database NIID.lv (some per semester); Rīga Stradiņš University also has cheaper co-financed places in some programmes. Citizens of other countries cannot get budget places and pay the institution's fee for international students, shown where the institution publishes it. Private institutions charge fees to everyone.
Language of instruction
Latvian: 263 programmes; English: 101 programmes. See all English-taught programmes in Latvia.
