Student Housing in Luxembourg: University Residences and Alternatives
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
Housing is the hardest part of arriving in Luxembourg. The University of Luxembourg runs residences, but it states plainly that housing is not guaranteed and that demand exceeds supply, especially in September and in February. Our catalogue does not list prices for Luxembourg residences, so the figures here come from the university's own pages.
What the university offers
The university has 33 residences, mainly in the south of the country. The towns named on its pages are Esch-sur-Alzette, Belvaux, Niederkorn, Oberkorn, Dudelange, Mondercange and Noertzange, plus Luxembourg City. Rooms are allocated by availability and, when possible, close to where you study. You cannot choose a particular residence.
Eligible students are those enrolled full-time in a bachelor's, master's or doctoral programme at the university. Part-time students and students with children are not eligible. Exchange students can apply too.
All rooms are furnished. There are five types:
- Type 1: a single room with shared bathroom and kitchen, about 15 square metres;
- Type 2: a single room with private bathroom and shared kitchen, about 19 square metres;
- Type 3: a single studio with private bathroom and kitchen, about 24 square metres;
- Types 4 and 5: a double studio and a two-room apartment, both for couples only.
You must state your preferred room type and your monthly budget when you apply. Incomplete requests are not processed. The university gives a minimum monthly rental budget of 400 euros on the housing offer page, and a minimum of 450 euros on its cost-of-living page. Treat the actual rent as unknown until you receive an offer, since the amount depends on the room and is not published in advance.
How the application and lease work
- Apply on the university's accommodation platform after you are admitted. The pages say requests open no earlier than 10 weeks before the move-in date, and another page says up to 12 weeks, so check the opening date for your semester.
- If a room is available, you get an offer by email. It is reserved for you for 10 days, and you cannot visit the residence beforehand. If you decline, you do not get another offer in the same semester.
- To confirm, pay within the 10 days a guarantee equal to two months of rent and the first rent installment. Otherwise the reservation is cancelled.
- To sign the lease and collect the keys you must show proof of home insurance with an insurer registered in Luxembourg.
Leases start on the 1st or the 16th of a month and cover one semester at a time. They can be renewed up to a maximum of 36 months for a bachelor's student in the same programme. The first lease can only be ended after two full months, and a running lease needs one month's notice. Rent is paid in advance by bank transfer, no later than the 5th of the month for a lease starting on the 1st, or the 20th for a lease starting on the 16th. The lease ends when your student status ends.
When no room is offered
Plan for it. The university lists alternatives, among them an intergenerational co-living partner called WeConnect, where a student lives with a host who has a room to rent. It also lists private platforms such as loft68.lu, appartager.lu and immojeune.com, and states that it has no partnership with these and does not endorse them. For non-EU students there is a constraint: the university notes that non-EU students must reside in Luxembourg, so living across the border is not an option for them.
A room is also an immigration matter. When you apply for your first residence permit, you must give proof of appropriate housing, such as a lease, unless you already provided it with the visa application. You must have a legal address to be issued a permit. Read the arrival checklist and the student visa guide.
Budget for the first weeks
The university advises students to expect at least 2,700 euros of initial expenses, covering registration, health insurance, the first rent, the deposit, rent insurance and meals. For university housing it states the guarantee and the first rent must be paid in one payment within 10 days of the offer. Rent insurance starts from 55 euros a year. See the cost guide.
