How Much Does It Cost to Study in Luxembourg? Fees and Living Costs
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
Public tuition in Luxembourg is low, and the cost of living is high. The tuition is the small part of the bill. Rent, health insurance and the funds you must prove for a visa decide whether the year is affordable.
The University of Luxembourg: one flat fee
The University of Luxembourg does not charge separate tuition fees for international students. Every student, EU or not, pays the same registration fee, which the programme pages for 2026/27 give as 400 euros per semester. In our catalogue that is €800 per year for EU students and €800 for non-EU students, and it is the same for every programme at the university. The fee is paid every semester of the programme, normally six for a bachelor.
Two things sit on top of it:
- The application fee is 100 euros per application. It is non-refundable, but 100 euros are deducted from the first semester fee if you are admitted and enrol.
- Health insurance. International students must be affiliated with the Luxembourg social security system, and the university says this increases the total cost. The amount is calculated from the social minimum wage, and the student pays it to the university together with the enrolment fee. See health insurance for students in Luxembourg.
Private institutions: many times more
The private institutions charge the same amount to EU and most non-EU students, and the difference from the public university is more than tenfold. In the catalogue, the private programmes cost between €9,000 and €12,500 a year for EU students, and up to €14,300 for non-EU students.
- LUNEX, in Differdange, charges from 9,000 euros a year for the sport management and nutrition programmes up to 10,788 euros in the first year of physiotherapy, with a one-time registration fee of 695 euros on top. Physiotherapy rises to 11,004 euros in the second year and 11,220 in the third.
- Luxembourg School of Business quotes 12,500 euros a year for the January 2027 intake of its Bachelor in International Business, and 14,300 euros for students who need a visa. From September 2027 the school lists 13,200 and 15,000 euros.
The school ties the higher price to the need for a visa, not to the passport, so the non-EU figure applies to students who require one.
Living costs and the starting budget
University housing is not guaranteed, and the university itself says that renting on the private market is significantly more expensive. The university advises planning for at least 2,700 euros of initial expenses on arrival, which covers registration, health insurance, the first rent, the deposit, rent insurance and meals.
The university's own monthly estimates are useful as a floor:
- University housing from about 450 euros a month, if you are offered a room. The deposit is two months of rent.
- Meals at the university canteen at 5 euros each, which the university adds up to 360 euros a month.
- A mobile subscription at 40 euros and leisure at 150 euros a month.
- Books and materials at 400 euros a year.
Public transport is a saving: second class on trains, trams and buses within the country is free. First class and cross-border journeys are not. Details on rooms are in the housing guide.
The funds a non-EU student must prove
For the student visa, monthly resources must equal at least 80 percent of the social inclusion income in force. The University of Luxembourg quotes the figure for 2025 as 1,517 euros a month, or 18,211 euros for an academic year, and says it may rise when social parameters change. Check the current figure with the immigration authority before you open a bank certificate. The documents that count are covered in the student visa guide.
Non-EU students may work up to 15 hours a week on average, but a job should not be the basis of the visa budget. See scholarships and student jobs.
