How admission works in Belgium
Belgium has two separate systems. In the Flemish Community you apply directly to the institution, which sets its own Dutch-language requirement (KU Leuven asks for B2) and deadlines (for the 2027/28 intake, non-EEA applicants to KU Leuven's Dutch-taught programmes must apply by 1 February 2027); medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine require a competitive entrance exam with fixed quotas, held on 2–4 July 2027 (registration 1 March–17 May 2027 on vlaanderen.be). In the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles you need the CESS or a foreign diploma recognised as equivalent (equivalence requests for 2027/28 until 15 July 2027), enrolment closes on 30 September, non-EU applicants usually apply by spring (31 March at ULB and ULiège in 2026), and medicine and dentistry are open only through a competitive entrance exam held once a year in late August (27 August in 2026), with at most 15% of places for students not resident in Belgium. Non-residents also face quotas and an electronic draw (tirage au sort) in veterinary medicine (20%) and in physiotherapy, speech therapy and audiology (30%), with a single online application during three days at the end of August (25–27 August in 2026); arts schools and conservatoires admit students through an entrance test.
