Alguns cursos são de acesso livre; noutros há menos vagas do que candidatos (numerus clausus) e decidem a média do ensino secundário (1,0 é a melhor, 4,0 a pior) e o tempo de espera. Medicina, Medicina Dentária, Medicina Veterinária e Farmácia são atribuídas através do hochschulstart.de. O diploma estrangeiro é verificado (muitas vezes através da uni-assist); se não der acesso direto, é exigido um ano de Studienkolleg e o exame Feststellungsprüfung. Os cursos em alemão exigem alemão de nível DSH-2 / TestDaF 4.
