Exchange Semester in San Marino: Nomination, Deadlines and English Courses
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
The University of the Republic of San Marino (UNIRSM) takes exchange students for one or two semesters. It is a way to see the country and the university before deciding on a full degree, but you can only use it if your own university has an agreement with UNIRSM. This guide follows the university's pages for incoming students. The permit and insurance side is covered in the San Marino study permit guide.
Who can come
UNIRSM accepts students from universities and institutions with which it has a signed agreement and publishes the list of partners. You cannot apply on your own. Your home university must nominate you. The programmes open to exchange students are, according to the university, the bachelor's in Management Engineering, Civil Engineering, Design and Communication and Digital Media.
Steps
- Agreement. Check that your university is on the partner list.
- Nomination. Your university emails the international office of UNIRSM with your exchange period and length in months, your home studies and the UNIRSM programme you want. UNIRSM replies to your university and gives further instructions.
- Account. You create an account on the university's student portal, Esse3, following the tutorial the university provides.
- Application documents. You send the application form and the required documents by email. For the Erasmus path the university lists an identity card, an English or Italian language certificate at level B1, a draft learning agreement and a passport-size photo. The form and document list differ by programme, and the university links to a page for each.
- Acceptance. The International Office notifies you.
- Permit and housing. See below.
Deadlines: check which page is current
The university's own pages give different dates, so confirm them with the International Office before you plan.
- The "How to apply" page gives nomination deadlines of 15 May (autumn semester) and 15 November (spring semester), and application deadlines of 30 May and 30 November.
- The "Incoming" page gives a single application deadline of 15 July for the first semester and 30 November for the second.
Courses and language
Courses at UNIRSM are mainly taught in Italian. The university also offers a selection of courses in English for exchange students. The Department of Human Sciences offers courses in digital media, and the Department of Economics, Science, Engineering and Design offers courses in civil engineering, management engineering and design. Which English courses run varies each semester. You can choose from the dedicated "International" course package and from the Italian-language courses of each degree. The English courses are for exchange students only: our catalogue marks 0 of the degrees as taught in English.
Housing
UNIRSM has no student residence. The Student Office gives international students a list of available accommodation, and the International Office supports you in the search. The incoming-student page also links to information on accommodation and on public transport in the Republic.
Arrival
Go to the Student Office within two days of arriving. You collect your university badge, your enrolment certificate and your SMaC card. Then you deliver the permit documents to the Gendarmerie. After that you check the timetable and exam calendar of your programme and the exam programmes. They are published per degree.
When you leave, collect the Transcript of Records, an official list of exams and other activities. If the Student Office cannot issue it immediately, it sends it to your email or to your university.
Staying longer
If you later decide to enrol for a degree, you start from the admission rules for degree students. Exchange does not give you a place. See how to get into the University of San Marino.
