Student Housing in Slovakia: University Dormitories, Prices and Deadlines

Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.

In Slovakia most students who move away from home live in a university dormitory: a študentský domov or, in everyday speech, an internát. Each university runs its own dormitories and decides who gets a place, so you apply to your university, not to a national body. Dormitories are cheap, but places are limited and deadlines come early.

Who allocates the rooms

The Higher Education Act says a university provides accommodation for its students within its means. When it allocates places, it looks mainly at:

Each university publishes its own allocation rules and point system, and a place is never guaranteed. Some universities set aside places for foreign students: STU, for example, fixes a number of places for them each year.

When to apply

Most universities allocate rooms for the next academic year in spring and summer, through their study information system. New students can usually apply only once they are admitted. Examples for 2026/27:

UniversityDeadlines for new students
Bratislava University of Economics and Business (EUBA)English-taught programmes: 14–30 April 2026; other first-year students: 22 June–10 July 2026; pay by 11 August 2026 or lose the place
Slovak University of Technology (STU)Online application, with a separate English form for foreign students; each faculty sets the date for first-year students
University of PrešovFirst-year students who got a place paid a €130 reservation fee between 3 and 21 August 2026

If you miss the date, ask anyway. Comenius University in Bratislava, for example, takes additional applications directly at each dormitory after the main round, and allocates any beds that are still free.

Prices

Dormitory prices are set per bed per month and differ by building and room type. At STU's dormitories in Bratislava, the price list valid from 1 October 2026 runs from about €90 to €180 per bed a month. In STU's Mladá Garda dormitory, for example, a bed in a double room costs €120 and a single room €136–€149.

Expect a few other payments:

What a room is like

Many dormitories are built as "cells" (bunky): two rooms, for one or two students each, that share a bathroom and toilet. STU's Mladá Garda in Bratislava is an example. Look at the photos and the room type before you choose.

If you get no place

Renting privately

Always sign a written contract and never send money before you have seen the room or signed. Non-EU university students do not need to prove accommodation when they apply for residence, so you can look for a room after you arrive. Read finding student housing in Europe without being scammed.
