Student Housing in Lithuania: University Dormitories in Vilnius and Kaunas
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
Lithuania has no national student housing organisation. Many students, including international ones, live in dormitories run by their own university or college (bendrabučiai). Rooms are cheap by European standards, usually shared, and booked through the university's own system once you have an offer.
Who rents to students
- University dormitories. The large state universities in Vilnius and Kaunas have their own blocks, often grouped on one campus. Places are for the institution's own students.
- College dormitories. Some colleges also offer rooms; check the college's website.
- The private market. Flats and rooms rented from private landlords, usually more expensive than a dormitory and paid with utility bills on top.
Prices in Vilnius
Vilnius University has seven dormitory buildings on Saulėtekio avenue, Olandų street and Didlaukio street. Its price list from 1 August 2025 gives these monthly prices per person for VU students:
| Room | Standard dormitory | Dormitory with better conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Double room, shared by two | €85 | €130 |
| Double room, alone | €165 | €260 |
| Triple room, shared by three | €70 | €90 |
Internet costs €5 a month. You pay a deposit of at least €150, or one month's rent if that is higher. VU dormitories are open for the academic year, from 1 September to 30 June.
VILNIUS TECH runs dormitories mostly around Saulėtekio avenue, plus one in Klaipėda. Monthly prices range from €85 for a place in a standard triple room to €280 for a renovated single room. International full-time students pay a €600 deposit to finalise their booking, refunded when they leave if nothing is damaged.
Prices in Kaunas
Kaunas University of Technology has 12 dormitories on its campus. International students live in dormitories No. 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 10, which have single and double rooms, and bedding is provided. KTU's current list puts a place in these buildings at about €110 to €255 in a double room and about €195 to €300 in a single room. Rent is paid by the 25th of each month through the university's information system.
KTU students in difficult circumstances who pay no more than €138 for a room can apply for an accommodation grant.
Other universities in Kaunas, such as Vytautas Magnus University, publish their own dormitory price lists.
How to apply
- Accept your study offer. Dormitory booking is normally open only to admitted students.
- Look for the accommodation step in your admission portal or student information system. At VU degree students apply through apply.vu.lt; at VILNIUS TECH through mano.vilniustech.lt after receiving an offer; at KTU through the dormitory reservation system.
- Give your exact arrival date and pay the deposit.
- Check which building and room you have been given, and plan your arrival for the move-in dates. At VU the autumn move-in runs from 26 August to 6 September.
Book as soon as you can: non-EU students also need proof of accommodation for the residence permit application.
The private market
If you want your own flat, or the dormitory is full, you rent privately. Prices are higher than in dormitories, especially in central Vilnius, and utilities are usually extra.
- Always sign a written contract and keep proof of every payment.
- Never send a deposit for a flat you have not seen, in person or by a live video call.
- Check that the contract allows you to declare your place of residence, which non-EU students must do after they collect their permit.
Tips
- Ask your university's international office as soon as you are admitted. It is the best source of current prices.
- A shared room in an older building is the cheapest option, often under €100 a month.
- Compare buildings: at VU the same double room costs €85 or €130 a month depending on the dormitory.
