How Much Does It Cost to Study in Lithuania? Tuition Fees and Living Costs
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
In Lithuania the price of a bachelor's degree depends on your citizenship, on the place you win in admission, and on the institution. Lithuania uses the euro, so every amount here is in EUR.
State-funded and paid places
Lithuania does not charge everyone the same way. Every year the state pays for a set number of first-year places, and LAMA BPO says there were about 12,900 of them in 2026.
- State-funded places are free. Lithuanian, EU and EFTA citizens, and non-EU citizens with permanent residence, compete for them by score in the LAMA BPO joint admission.
- Paid places (valstybės nefinansuojamos vietos) go to applicants from the same groups who rank below the funded places. The student pays the annual study price set by the institution. On these places EU citizens pay the same price as Lithuanians.
- Other non-EU students apply directly to the institution and always study on a paid place, at the tuition the institution sets for international students.
An EU citizen with strong results may study for free; a student from outside the EU should plan to pay every year.
Tuition at state institutions
Each institution sets its own prices, programme by programme. In our catalogue, the typical annual price of a paid place at a state university or college is €4,200, starting from €2,281 at some colleges. Arts, engineering and science programmes usually cost more than business, law and the social sciences.
For non-EU students, the typical tuition we list at state institutions is €4,201 a year. English-taught medicine and dentistry are the most expensive programmes, up to €15,000 a year for dentistry at Vilnius University. Some long programmes charge more from the fourth year on, so check the fee for every year of the course.
Some colleges publish one price "for foreign students" without separating EU and non-EU applicants. If you are an EU citizen applying to an English-taught programme, ask whether you apply through LAMA BPO at the Lithuanian price or directly at the international price.
Non-state institutions
Non-state universities and colleges set their own prices and have few or no state-funded places. In our catalogue their typical annual price is €2,970 for Lithuanian and EU students and €3,800 for non-EU students, with business programmes at ISM up to €8,330.
Each programme page on our site shows the fee the institution has published for 2026/27, with a link to the source. Prices for students starting in 2027 may be different.
Other costs at the start
- Application fees vary. LAMA BPO admission is free, while some universities charge international applicants, for example €100 at Vilnius University.
- Residence permit fees. Vilnius University lists a state fee of €110 plus a €110 service fee when you apply from abroad through VFS Global.
- Health insurance for the whole stay, if you come from outside the EU.
Help with the bill
- The State Studies Foundation (Valstybinis studijų fondas) can refund the study price to the best students on paid places, and offers state-supported loans for tuition and living costs. Check its conditions before counting on them.
- For bachelor's students from outside the EU, help comes mainly from the institutions. VILNIUS TECH, for example, offers its best first-year international applicants a 100%, 50% or 25% tuition scholarship. The state scholarships listed on Study in Lithuania are for master's, doctoral and short-term study, not for bachelor's degrees.
Housing
University dormitories are the cheapest place to live. At Vilnius University a place in a shared double room costs €85 to €130 a month and a room to yourself €165 to €260, depending on the building. At Kaunas University of Technology a place costs from about €90 to €300 a month. The details are in student housing in Lithuania.
Money to show for the residence permit
Non-EU students must prove they can support themselves. For 2026, Vilnius University asks for at least €577 a month for 12 months plus €1,153 for the journey home, €8,077 in total, and VILNIUS TECH gives the same €8,077 for one year. EU students who stay longer than three months declare funds of at least €576.50 a month, according to LSMU's 2026 guidance. See student visa for Lithuania.
How to keep costs down
- If you are an EU citizen, apply through LAMA BPO and aim for a state-funded place.
- Compare colleges and universities in the same field: the price gap can be large.
- Non-EU students may work up to 20 hours a week during term, but should not build their budget on it.
