How Much Does It Cost to Study in North Macedonia? Fees and Extras

Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
Tuition in North Macedonia is low by European standards, but it depends on the university and the programme. Citizens of North Macedonia pay a small contribution in the state quota. Foreign citizens are enrolled outside that quota and pay a fee set by the university. The calls for 2026/27 name one fee for foreigners and do not separate EU from non-EU citizens.
Prices are in euros, payment is in denars
Universities quote fees in euros and collect them in denars. UKIM and the University of Bitola, for example, state that the euro amount is paid in its denar equivalent at the average exchange rate of the National Bank of the Republic of North Macedonia. The denar is the local currency, so the amount in denars changes slightly with the rate. International Balkan University lets students choose to pay in denars or euros.
Public universities: what the calls say
Our catalogue shows public-university fees for foreign students from €400 to €5,000 a year, with a typical value around €1,000. The calls for 2026/27 show how wide the range is:
- UKIM, Skopje: the fee is set per faculty and per 60 ECTS credits, which is one year. In the table of the call, foreign students pay between 400 and 5,000 euros depending on the programme. Medicine in English is listed at 5,000, and the same degree in Macedonian at 3,000. Dentistry in English is listed at 5,000.
- University of St. Clement of Ohrid, Bitola: 1,000 euros a year, with 1,600 for the Faculty of Information and Communication Technologies and 1,300 for the Higher Medical School.
- Goce Delcev University, Stip: 1,000 euros a year for programmes in Macedonian, and 1,500 for the Faculty of Medical Sciences, plus 100 euros for laboratory costs.
- University of Information Science and Technology, Ohrid: its website states 600 euros per semester for international students.
Citizens of North Macedonia pay far less. The UKIM call lists 200 euros a year in the state quota and 400 euros for self-funded students. Those prices do not apply to foreign citizens.
Private universities
Private universities set their own prices, and the catalogue shows €1,300 to €8,000 a year. From their 2026/27 calls:
- University American College Skopje states an indicative fee of 3,600 euros a year for all first-cycle programmes.
- International Balkan University publishes two price lists: one for students from the Balkan countries and one for international students. Its international-student fees for 2026/27 run from 2,000 euros (some Turkish-language programmes) to 6,000 euros (engineering and architecture), and 8,000 euros for dentistry. Applicants whose English falls below 60 out of 100 in its test must first take a paid preparatory year. The university also asks international students for 500 euros towards the recognition of documents and the residence permit.
Eurydice gives the general picture for the country: public first-cycle students are either state-funded, paying a co-financing fee, or self-funded, and private institutions charge much more. For foreigners, always use the figure in the university's own call.
Extra costs at enrolment
- UKIM asks for 750 denars at enrolment, every year, for student activities, plus a 50-denar administrative fee and a 300-denar application fee at the faculty for programmes without a test.
- Recognition of your school diploma at the Ministry of Education and Science costs two payments, 3,000 and 250 denars, according to Goce Delcev University. See document recognition for North Macedonia.
- The residence permit carries a fee of roughly 40 euros according to a UKIM procedure sheet. The newer version of that sheet lists only an unspecified administrative fee, so ask. See student visa for North Macedonia.
- Health insurance valid in the country is required. UKIM asks for annual insurance from your home country. See health insurance for students in Europe.
Living costs
Our catalogue does not hold living-cost data for North Macedonia, so use the university's own guide. UKIM's guide for international students lists a studio at 80 to 120 euros a month and a larger flat at 130 to 200 euros, with utilities of 50 to 150 euros on top, and hostels at 7 to 15 euros per bed per night. Those are the university's figures and rents may have risen since, so check current listings. Every faculty has a student canteen, and foreign students may buy a meal plan.
