How admission works in Bosnia and Herzegovina

There is no national application system: you apply directly to each university or faculty, which publishes its own call for enrolment (konkurs za upis) with the number of places, the entry requirements and the deadlines. Most calls for the autumn intake open in May or June, with a first round in June or July and a second round in September; places are often split between state-funded (budget) places for citizens and self-financing places. Selection is by points from the secondary-school record and, at many faculties (medicine, architecture, the arts, sport, engineering), an entrance test or aptitude exam (prijemni ispit); foreign students apply under the same conditions or a separate quota, depending on the institution. A secondary-school certificate obtained abroad has to be recognised (nostrified) by the competent cantonal ministry or the entity ministry of education before enrolment, although many universities let you sit the competition while the procedure is under way. Because the country has three education authorities (the Federation, Republika Srpska and Brčko District), deadlines and documents differ between universities.
