Student Visa and Residence Permit for Iceland: Funds, Insurance and Deadlines
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
In Iceland, students from outside the EEA, EFTA and the Nordic countries must have a residence permit for study before they travel. Students from EEA and EFTA states need no permit but must register. This guide reflects the rules in October 2026.
Who needs what
- Nordic, EEA and EFTA citizens need no residence permit. For EEA and EFTA students, Registers Iceland sets as a condition that you register your legal domicile in Iceland no later than three months after arrival, are admitted to an accredited institution and can support yourself. Until you have been registered for three months you need comprehensive private health insurance, although the European Health Insurance Card plus a home-country certificate may be enough. Nordic citizens use a separate Registers Iceland procedure.
- Everyone else applies to the Directorate of Immigration for a student residence permit before arrival, and the University of Iceland says you must receive approval before you travel.
Conditions for the student permit
You must be 18 or older, admitted to full-time study at an Icelandic university, and enrolled in 30 ECTS per semester, which the school confirms in writing. You also need:
- A valid passport, valid at least 90 days beyond the permit.
- Means of support for the whole period of the permit: ISK 259,951 a month for one person, ISK 415,922 for a married couple, and ISK 129,976 more for each adult family member. These amounts follow Reykjavík's basic financial assistance. Cash, third-party support and property do not count.
- Health insurance valid in Iceland for at least three months from the day your legal domicile is registered, with cover of at least ISK 2,000,000. After three months you are automatically covered by national health insurance. The University of Iceland's health page speaks of insurance valid for six months, so buy cover for the longer period if in doubt.
- A criminal record certificate not older than 12 months. It needs no legal authentication.
Deadlines, fee and how to apply
The Directorate says it must receive your application and all documents by 1 May for the autumn semester and 1 October for the spring semester to be sure the permit is granted before classes start. Allow time for documents such as the criminal record certificate.
The processing fee is ISK 70,000 and is not refunded. You pay it by bank transfer first, then send the signed application on paper, with the payment receipt, a 35x45 mm passport photo and your documents, to the Directorate at Dalvegur 18, 201 Kópavogur, or leave it in the drop box. If you need a visa to travel to Iceland, you may not be in the country while the application is processed.
After the permit is granted
You have 90 days to book a photo appointment for your residence permit card, submit a notification of residence and, if you come from a region the Directorate lists, take a medical examination within two weeks of arriving. Then the card is issued, and Registers Iceland assigns your national ID number (kennitala), which you need for a bank account.
Working, renewing and staying on
- Work: you may work up to 60% of full-time employment without a work permit, in total across employers. You may work more during scheduled breaks, in a formal internship, or after graduating while seeking a job in your field.
- Renewal: a student permit lasts up to one year and is renewed for up to one year at a time. You must show you completed at least 75% of a full-time course load, meaning at least 45 ECTS in an academic year.
- Family: only students in full-time Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral programmes may bring a spouse or children under 18. Diploma students cannot.
