Student Housing in Czechia: University Dormitories and Renting a Flat
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
Czechia is the easiest country in our catalogue for student housing. Public universities run large dormitories (koleje), they are inexpensive, and international students are usually offered a place. That matters twice over for non-EU students, because the visa requires proof of accommodation for the whole stay.
Dormitories
Each university has an accommodation office that runs its dormitories and canteens. For the 15 dormitories with a published price in our catalogue, the typical monthly price is €139 to €309.
- Rooms are mostly double, in units of two or three rooms sharing a bathroom and a small kitchen. Single rooms exist at a higher price.
- Applications go through the university's online accommodation system once you are admitted. Deadlines fall in late spring or summer. First-year students are ranked by criteria such as the distance of their home from the university, so students from abroad score well. Many universities guarantee a place to international students in English-taught programmes.
- Contracts run for the academic year, with a deposit, and you can usually stay over the summer at a daily rate.
- The dormitory issues the accommodation confirmation you need for the visa and registers your stay with the foreign police.
Prague is the tightest market: Charles University, the Czech Technical University and the University of Economics have many places, but demand is high. In Brno, Olomouc, Ostrava, Plzeň and other university cities, places are easier to obtain. Dormitories by university are on our Czechia pages.
Renting privately
Students who prefer a flat usually share one. Offers are advertised with a layout code: 2+1 means two rooms and a separate kitchen, 2+kk two rooms with a kitchenette. Prague is by far the most expensive city, and Brno follows.
- The rent is quoted without utilities. Ask for the monthly advance payments for heating, water and electricity.
- The deposit is limited by the Civil Code to three months' rent.
- Agencies charge a commission, commonly one month's rent.
- Contracts are often in Czech only. Have someone translate it before you sign.
Accommodation and the visa
For a long-term visa or residence permit you must prove accommodation for the entire period requested. Accepted proof is a dormitory confirmation, a lease, or the owner's confirmation with an officially verified signature. A hotel booking is not enough. If you rent privately, make sure the owner will sign the confirmation form before you pay anything. See student visa for Czechia.
After arrival, non-EU nationals register their address within three working days, unless the accommodation provider does so. Report later changes of address as well.
A sensible plan
Take the dormitory for the first year. It solves the visa requirement, costs little, and puts you among other students. Move to a shared flat later if you want to, when you know the city and some Czech.
Budget
Czech-taught study at public universities is free of tuition, so housing and food are the main costs. See how much it costs to study in Czechia.
