IB Diploma: University Admission in Estonia
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
For an IB student, Estonia is one of the simpler countries in Europe. There is no subject pattern to follow and no national formula for English-taught programmes: each university ranks you on its own assessment, and your IB results are a gateway and sometimes one part of the score. Two things need care: the type of IB document you hold, and the timing, because most deadlines fall before IB results come out in July.
Which IB document counts
Only the full IB Diploma gives access to a bachelor's degree. The University of Tartu says it plainly: only candidates whose diploma carries the note "IB Diploma Awarded" qualify for university studies in Estonia. A diploma marked "IB DP Course awarded" or "IB DP Course Results" will not do. TalTech and Tallinn University set the same condition. TalTech's admission regulation, in force from 1 August 2026, says that IB and European Baccalaureate graduates are admitted on the basis of the diploma "(Diploma Awarded)".
If you are admitted, the University of Tartu and TalTech ask for your IB results to be sent to them directly through the IB's official verification system.
How IB students are ranked
English-taught programmes
Most IB students apply through DreamApply. Each programme ranks applicants on its own criteria, for example at the University of Tartu:
| Programme | What counts |
|---|---|
| Business Administration | Motivation letter 60%, online mathematics test 40% |
| Science and Technology | Mathematics result 20%, best of biology, chemistry or physics 20%, motivation letter 20%, entry test 20%, interview 20% |
| Medicine | Motivation letter 20%, online entrance exam in physics and chemistry 60%, interview 20% |
These are the rules for the 2026 intake. The university says it will publish the 2027 requirements by the end of December. TalTech, too, assesses most applicants on a motivation letter, an online test and an online interview.
There are also minimum standards for your school results. TalTech's regulation requires foreign applicants to have a secondary-school average of at least 60% of the maximum possible grade, and Tallinn University expects at least 60% of the maximum possible results. Ask the admissions office how this applies to IB grades.
Estonian-taught programmes
Programmes taught in Estonian rank applicants mainly on Estonian state exam results, through the national system SAIS. TalTech's regulation says that IB and EB exams in the required subjects count on the same basis as state exams, and that the IB points are converted into state exam points. The conversion table itself is not published in the regulation. To compete for these free places you also need strong Estonian. TalTech, for example, accepts a B2 or C1 certificate in place of the state exam in Estonian as a second language.
Deadlines and the July results
May-session IB results arrive in July. Most English-taught deadlines are in spring, so you will usually apply with your current grades:
- University of Tartu. IB students may apply with their current grades. By the deadline, 15 April for the 2026 intake, you upload your latest transcript and an official statement from your school confirming expected graduation. If admitted, certified copies of your final documents must reach the university by 31 July if you graduate abroad.
- TalTech. For 2027 the DreamApply deadline is 22 March for third-country nationals, 1 May for applicants from OECD countries, Ukraine and Georgia, and 1 June for EU, EEA and Swiss citizens.
- Tallinn University. Applicants still at school are given an extension until 1 July to submit their final documents. Check with the university how this works with your IB results date.
November-session graduates already have their results and apply with the final diploma.
English
You usually do not need an English test. TalTech's regulation waives proof of English for IB and EB graduates applying to bachelor's programmes. The University of Tartu exempts applicants who completed the IB Diploma Programme in English with the diploma. Tallinn University accepts IB graduation documents as proof of English. See IELTS and TOEFL for European universities.
Medicine
Medicine in English is taught at the University of Tartu as a six-year integrated programme. Your IB grades do not enter the ranking directly. The online entrance exam in physics and chemistry counts for 60%. You are invited to the interview only if you score at least 51 out of 100 on both the exam and the motivation letter. There is no required HL subject, but the motivation letter asks how many chemistry and biology courses you took at school, so your choice of sciences in the Diploma Programme still shows. The fee is in how much it costs to study in Estonia.
Recognition
For English-taught programmes the university checks your IB Diploma itself. For Estonian-taught programmes, TalTech asks applicants with a foreign secondary qualification for an assessment from the Estonian ENIC/NARIC centre at Harno. See document recognition for Estonia.
