Bachelor's Degrees in English in Slovakia: Where They Are and What They Cost
Fee figures: catalogue of 6 October 2026.
Slovakia teaches most of its degrees in Slovak, and those are free at public universities for everyone, whatever their passport. English-taught programmes are a smaller group, usually with a fee. Our catalogue lists 64 programmes taught in English out of 907 full-time bachelor's and long-cycle programmes in the country.
Where the programmes are
Almost all of them are in two cities. Bratislava has the largest group, and Košice, in the east, is close behind. Smaller groups are in Nitra, Prešov, Trnava and Žilina, with single programmes in Banská Bystrica, Martin, Michalovce and Sládkovičovo.
The institutions with the most English-taught programmes in our catalogue are:
- in Košice: the Technical University of Košice, which has the largest offer of any Slovak university, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University and the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy;
- in Bratislava: Comenius University, the Slovak University of Technology and the Bratislava University of Economics and Business, which also teaches in English in Košice and Michalovce;
- in Nitra: the Slovak University of Agriculture;
- in Martin: Comenius University's Jessenius Faculty of Medicine.
A few private institutions in Bratislava and Prešov also teach in English, sometimes as bilingual programmes in English and Slovak. Check the language of each year of study before you apply.
Which fields
Business, economics and management make up the largest group: business administration, finance and banking, public administration and EU policy, at public and private universities alike. Engineering and technology come next, almost all at the technical universities in Košice and Bratislava and at the agricultural university in Nitra: mechanical and automotive engineering, aerospace technology and pilot training, civil engineering, mechatronics, energy, informatics and production management.
The third group is medicine and health: general medicine, dentistry and pharmacy at Comenius University, general medicine and dentistry at Šafárik University, and veterinary medicine in Košice. These are long-cycle programmes that you enter straight from school. Smaller groups cover law, psychology, environmental and biological sciences, British and American studies, music and liberal arts.
What it costs
The Higher Education Act lets a public university charge for a programme taught only in a foreign language, if the university decides to. The fee is the same for EU and non-EU students at public universities, so the two columns below are close.
| English-taught programmes in our catalogue | EU, EEA and Swiss students | Non-EU students |
|---|---|---|
| Typical annual fee | €2,000 | €2,450 |
| Highest | €14,500 | €14,500 |
- The lowest fee is €0: some universities have decided not to charge for their English-taught programmes in 2026/27, among them the Bratislava University of Economics and Business, the agricultural university in Nitra and some faculties of the Slovak University of Technology.
- The top of the range is medicine and dentistry. At Comenius University's Faculty of Medicine in Bratislava, general medicine in English costs €13,000 and dentistry €14,500 a year in 2026/27.
- The Technical University of Košice has not published exact fees for its English-taught programmes for 2026/27, so our catalogue shows them without a fee. Ask the faculty before you apply.
Private institutions charge everyone, and some charge non-EU students more. The full picture, with living costs, is in how much it costs to study in Slovakia.
How to apply
There is no national ranking. You apply to each programme separately through the Ministry of Education's central e-application, and each faculty sets its own selection: an entrance exam, admission on school results, or both. For 2027/28 most deadlines fall between the end of February and the end of April 2027. Medicine faculties run their own entrance tests in biology and chemistry, often on several dates. Your foreign school certificate needs a recognition statement or a decision of a regional school office. See how to get into a university in Slovakia and document recognition for Slovakia.
English requirements
Each faculty decides. Some ask for a certificate, others test you or rely on your school. Comenius University's Faculty of Medicine, for example, says it does not require an English certificate for its English-taught programmes in 2026/27. Read each programme's conditions on Portál VŠ and see IELTS and TOEFL for European universities.
Do you need Slovak?
Not for the degree itself, but you will meet it quickly. Everyday life, most part-time jobs and contact with patients in teaching hospitals are in Slovak. Medical faculties teach it: Šafárik University's study plan for general medicine in English for 2026/27 includes compulsory Slovak language courses. If you can reach a good level of Slovak, a Slovak-taught programme at a public university costs you nothing in tuition.
